Does HRT Increase the Risk of Breast Cancer? (Case Studies)

Breast cancer is the most common female cancer, with the median age at diagnosis being 62.  Seventy five percent of new cases occur in postmenopausal women.  Studies indicate that HRT with estrogen alone, or estrogen combined with progesterone does not increase the risk of breast cancer.

Unequal risks for breast cancer associated with different hormone replacement therapies: results from the E3N cohort study

Hormone Replacement Therapy After a Diagnosis of Breast Cancer in Relation to Recurrence and Mortality

Objective: to evaluate the impact of HRT on recurrence and mortality after a diagnosis of breast cancer.

Conclusions:

  • Lower risks of recurrence and mortality in women who used HRT after a breast cancer diagnosis than in women who did not

  • HRT after breast cancer has NO adverse effect on recurrence or mortality
